After crossing paths recently at SPECTRUM MIAMI, and discovering numerous synergies both personally and professionally, we are excited to announce the addition of abstract painter, Nihal Kececi, to Gallery Forty-Two.
Born and raised in Turkey, Nihal started drawing and painting at a young age. Despite her demonstrated talent in art, she studied physics and nuclear engineering before working in the software analysis field in both the United States and Canada. Following 9/11, the political climate caused her career to take a new path. Nihal returned to painting as her outlet. She sold her first original painting in 2007 and has since traveled the world exhibiting her work internationally at various art shows.
For the past 10 years, Nihal has been generating a consistent body of work as a professional artist based out of Washington D.C. She works in acrylic, oil and pastel, mostly at large scale. Whether painting whirling dervishes, dramatic landscapes, or impressionistic figures, Nihal masks the known with the unknown and explores the transcendental. Nihal characterizes her work as “the gap between representation and obstruction.” Typically, she doesn’t quite know her subject as she begins each painting. The image reveals itself as she works through her intuitive process.
“All of these are subconscious paintings,” said Nihal of her work. “I never know what’s going to come out. For me, it’s a journey. It’s more than just shapes and lines; it’s about feelings, my experiences with the universe.”
In late 2013, Nihal took yet another step in establishing herself as a successful artist. She found an old warehouse in the D.C. area and turned it into a chic and modern art gallery, called NK Gallery. In addition to her own work, Nihal showcases different artists from around the world each month. The space is also available to rent for private events, ranging from business meetings to catered parties.
Gallery Forty-Two currently shows Nihal’s large-scale original piece, Forgotten Dreams, as well as varying smaller scale abstractions.
