Gallery Forty-Two has announced plans to represent retro-styled illustrator Shannon Stamey and will feature the Indianapolis-based painter in both its first and second floor retail galleries. Stamey, a native of Charlotte, NC, is a “Golden Age illustrator born too late” whose works harken back to an era more than a century old.
Stamey’s work is inspired by artists, photographers, films and illustrators from the Golden Age and Pre-Raphaelites. His intention is to make each work look and feel as if it’s a piece from a bygone era using meticulous aging techniques and weathering processes. Stamey puts realistic characters in surrealistic situations and environments, creating one-frame narratives of untold fairytales.
The gallery will offer both original works as well as limited edition giclee reproductions of Stamey’s artwork. Each print is hand-antiqued by the artist, undergoing a tedious process of tea-staining and methodic creasing, tearing and sanding to mimic the textures of old newspapers and books.
